When it comes to VA combined ratings, it is important for veterans to understand how the VA finalizes their calculation.
The VA uses the concept of VA Math, a unique formula exclusive to the VA, to help determine and calculate your combined disability rating. However, this process often leaves veterans confused, especially if their goal is to achieve a 100% combined rating.
Fortunately, you can calculate your disability rating through our VA disability calculator, which provides a precise estimate of your VA rating, including the amount of compensation you may receive.
If you already have your combined VA disability ratings and are skeptical about whether the VA assigned the correct rating, let’s explore what VA disability math is and how you can calculate it without a VA disability rating calculator.
What Are Combined Ratings, and How Do They Work?
The VA combined rating system refers to how the VA combines multiple disabilities and estimates it under one total disability rating.
The VA does not simply add the percentage from each disability; instead, the VA uses an exclusive formula to determine the estimated VA disability combined rating.
Using VA’s Formula for Combining Ratings
For example, if a veteran receives a 50% disability rating for one condition and then acquires another 30% disability rating for a second condition, the VA does not simply add the two ratings together.
50% + 30% does not equal an 80% VA rating.
Instead, the VA considers the veteran as a “whole” person, meaning 100% efficiency or ability. If the veteran is rated 50% for one condition, this means the VA will subtract 50% from the 100% “whole” efficiency.
So, the veteran’s efficiency is now at 50%.
100% (whole person) – 50% (first condition rating) = 50% (remaining efficiency).
The VA will apply a 30% rating to the remaining 50% efficiency if the veteran later develops a secondary condition.
30% of 50% is 15%.
This 15% will be added to the original 50% rating, making the combined rating 65%.
50% (first condition) + 15% (from the second condition) = 65%.
Since the VA does not provide ratings in increments of 5% (for example, 65%), they will round up the total to the nearest 10%.
Therefore, the veteran’s final combined disability rating will be 70%.
Why Is VA Math So Complicated?
Understandably, many veterans find the VA Math frustrating, since the more conditions you claim, the harder it will be to acquire a 100% VA rating.
The VA math is designed to diminish the returns of additional benefits as they accumulate.
If we are going back to the example above, since the VA already considered you as 50%, then the remaining rating you shall receive should be deducted to the remaining 50% efficiency, not the 100%.
The VA system is structured to acknowledge that multiple conditions can have a cumulative impact, but it also ensures that higher ratings are progressively more difficult to achieve.
To make the process easier, veterans can use the VA combined disability rating table. It is a more comprehensive system that can calculate your overall combined disability rating.
Here is how you can use the VA disability table for the combined rating:
- Begin by listing your disability ratings in descending order, starting with the highest rating, followed by the second highest, and so on.
- Next, locate your highest rating in the left column of the chart.
- Then, find your second highest rating in the top row of the chart.
- The combined value for those two disabilities will be at the point where the row and column intersect.
For those with multiple disabilities, place the combined value of the first two in the left column of the charge. Then look for the third-highest rating in the top row and determine where the row and column intersect.

How to Strategically Work Toward 100% Ratings
It would be challenging to acquire a 100% rating, especially since the VA continuously deducts your “efficiency” as your overall rating increases. Here are some of the most effective strategic processes for achieving a 100% rating.
100% Individual Unemployability (TDIU)
TDIU provides veterans with compensation from the 100% disability rate. Veterans receive TDIU when their service-connected conditions prevent them from securing employment.
100% Temporary Total Ratings
Temporary total VA disability ratings vary depending on the type of your service-connected condition. Those who attain the 100% temporary total ratings received temporary disability, allowing them to receive a disability compensation equivalent to a 100% VA rating.
Special Monthly Compensation
It provides veterans that acquired a condition far more severe than the 100% disability rating allows. Veterans who require assistive devices, immediate care, or are unable to live independently are eligible for Special Monthly Compensation (SMC).
