Health Issues and Health Benefits for Military Veterans

There are a significant number of benefits that veterans can acquire after their service in the military. One of them is healthcare benefits for both mental and physical care.

The VASRD (Veterans Affairs Schedule for Rating Disabilities) understands that health issues among veterans need to be addressed, especially for those who served in the line of duty. As a result, they created a regulation to better understand the various conditions that can affect veterans and assign them Military Disability Ratings and VA Disability claims.

Military Veterans’ Health Concerns

Veterans can be at risk of different forms of health issues after their service. The Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) ensured that veterans received proper health benefits depending on their needs. Veterans’ health benefits vary from one another depending on the health issues that they are experiencing, which include mental health issues and physical health issues.

But what are the common veterans’ health issues? And what are the health benefits that are available for veterans, and how can you claim your VA benefits seamlessly? Read on to learn more.

Common health issues among veterans

The most common health issues that veterans experience after service in the line of duty are mental health issues such as PTSD and clinical depression. These are developed due to the traumatic stress caused by shocking and dangerous events, such as war.

Here are other common health issues experienced by veterans:

  • Injuries such as lost limbs caused by explosions or gunshots
  • Cancers and other conditions are caused by hazardous chemicals.
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Traumatic brain injury, polytrauma, and amputation

What Health Benefits are available for Veterans?

The Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) in the United States provides general and specialty mental health services for various mental health conditions, including substance abuse disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, military sexual trauma, and severe mental illness

Outpatient and inpatient mental health services are available. In Patient Aligned Care Teams (PACT) and VA nursing homes and residential care facilities where many Veterans are cared for, general and psychogeriatric mental health services are integral to primary care.

It is also important to consider that eligibility for these benefits is accounted for discharges other than dishonorable, unless an exception is granted by the DVA or VA regional office.

The VA medical benefits package for each veteran is unique. Yours will include the following assistance and care:

  • Treatment for illnesses and other injuries
  • Prevention of other health issues caused while in service
  • Enhance your movements and capability to function
  • Healthcare exams to determine if you are healthy
  • Health education
  • Immunization against infectious diseases
  • Counseling on genetic diseases

There are services that veterans can get with VA disability claims, but there are few that require eligibility, such as dental care.

The complete list of your covered benefits is determined by:

  • Priority groups, as well as
  • VA primary care supplier’s (primary medical experts such as doctors, nurse practitioners, or physician’s assistants) advice, and;
  • The medical guidelines for treatment of any possible health issues

The VA provides the following urgent and emergency care services to veterans:

  • Some VA healthcare facilities provide urgent or emergency care.
  • At critical care locations in our contracted network, care for injuries and illnesses that require immediate attention but are not life-threatening.
